Stainless steel 416 is a well-established grade of stainless steel with specific standard specifications that define its chemical composition, mechanical properties, and other characteristics. SS 416 is a type of stainless steel known for its good machinability and high strength. It is a martensitic stainless steel alloy that is often used in applications requiring high strength and moderate corrosion resistance.

Properties of stainless steel 416:

Machinability: One of the primary advantages of SS 416 is its excellent machinability compared to other stainless steels. The sulfur content enhances its ability to be cut and shaped with ease.
Strength and Hardness: SS 416 has good tensile strength and hardness, which makes it suitable for various mechanical components. However, its strength is not as high as some other stainless steels, like SS 431.
Corrosion Resistance: It offers moderate resistance to corrosion. While it performs adequately in mild environments, it is less resistant to corrosion than other stainless steels like SS 304 or SS 316. It’s generally not recommended for use in highly corrosive environments.

Grade 416 has the highest machinability of any stainless steel, at about 85% of that of a freemachining carbon steel. As for most other free-machining steels the improvement in machinability is achieved by addition of sulphur which forms manganese sulphide inclusions; this sulphur addition also lowers the corrosion resistance, weldability and formability to below that of its non-free machining equivalent Grade 410. Grade 416 is sometimes used in the unhardened or hardened and highly tempered condition because of its low cost and ready machinability. Martensitic stainless steels are optimised for high hardness, and other properties are to some degree compromised. Fabrication must be by methods that allow for poor weldability and usually also allow for a final harden and temper heat treatment. Corrosion resistance is lower than the common austenitic grades, and their useful operating temperature range is limited by their loss of ductility at sub-zero temperatures and loss of strength by over-tempering at elevated temperatures.
